I often think about this quote from Ibn Battuta, this great Moroccan traveller.
I find myself thinking how I normally entertain people, and most of the time, is by telling stories from my own travellings.
As a solo traveller, opposite to what most people think, you don’t travel alone, in fact, you are more available to communicate with everyone around you, and what has happens is, that most of the time you just spent time on your own if you want, because most of the times things just happen in the way that you always get company. I wish I could find the time to write about all the wonderful people I’ve met during my travellings and with whom I’ve shared, sometimes, a very enjoyable dinner, a bottle of wine, or a deep conversation that I haven’t shared with anyone else. The downside of this, is that you connect with this people and you probably don’t get to see them again in your life, because they tend to be from the other side of the world. With technology, sometimes, I still get in touch and follow on social media, but obviously it’s not the same as if they were just around the corner for a coffee. I think Jordan was the place where I met most wonderful people.
I remember this Chinese boy, he got on the bus from our hostel going to Petra. We didn’t speak anything on our journey to the park, and we haven’t crossed paths either during the day. But in the evening, we arrived with very good spirits after having experienced such a wonder of the world, we wanted to share and discuss what we had seen.
That’s how Sea Fisher(This was the translation of his name) and I decided to go out for a meal. By going out for a meal in the region of Petra, we actually meant we went for a freshly cooked falafel sandwich and a Coca Cola. We paid less then one pound for the meal!!And when we shared the normal questions why you are here, where are you going, I was very surprised to learn this young boy, was a game designer or developer for a high tech Chinese company, and decided to quit his job and go and see the world. He was telling me that he spent much of his time in front of a computer and that he started thinking that probably there was something else in the world that was worth to go and see. Then he told me that somehow he ended up with a little kitten in is flat, and that little kitten forced him to be away from the computer, playing around, requiring attention, needing feeding and, in his own words, she became the princes of the house, so he had to rearrange his life in order to accommodate the new princess. Then he decided to start reading classical poetry and he was fascinated by all the beautiful words and the way that words made him feel and think. And he also told me that before starting reading and having the kitten in his house, his other passion, apart from creating video games, was practising martial arts, which he was some sort of specialist.
I remember him trying to show me the benefits of marcial arts and that I really should do start practising, because that would be great, not only for my body, but would be amazing for my mind. It was really interesting to meet someone really young that had just discovered a new way to look at the world. The next day I went back to Israel and he went to Egypt, but I’ve learned quite a lot with this young boy. I told him I collect postcards that people send me from around the world and I remember him being very surprised when I told him which countries I had been to, and that I was travelling alone because I like. It’s interesting how human beings surprise each other.
I was very pleased when at the end of the night he told me that after having spoken to
his boss, and having explained his reasons to quit the job, his boss told him that he would wait for him! Ah!,and back in London I had two beautiful postcards from China, with two of his favourite places in Beijing, and why this places were so special to him.
I wish him all the luck in the world for being so brave quitting his job and following his instinct.
I would love to have the chance to reunite, in on occasion,, with so many wonderful people that I have learn a lot and are unforgettable.
